As a result of the developing consultancy relationship with East Hampshire District Council fostered by the activities of the Kingsley Access Team the team of disabled volunteers at the Centre was asked to explore the possibility of providing Disability Awareness Training to staff within the housing department of the Council. Staff from the local Housing Associations specifically requested to join the training and the first training course was delivered in early 1998 to over 25 housing and local authority staff.
With support from the Southern Partnership Team and the national training team of Scope a programme has been developed to increase awareness of the needs of disabled people within local authorities and voluntary organisations. The service is available to statutory and voluntary organisations within the local area for expenses only and is shortly to be made available to business organisations for a minimal fee.
As well as providing front-line staff in various agencies with ground-breaking collaborative learning with a group of highly accomplished disabled volunteers with a range of impairments the service is also deeply empowering to the individual volunteers delivering the training. All trainers are currently receiving training in training and are seeking formal recognition of their skills through the NVQ system.
